20 on Tuesday: Laura Brett

Newborn Photography.

You either love it or hate it.

Well, hate it is a pretty strong word.  But I think most photographers would agree, to be a good newborn photographer, you must have a passion for it.  It takes a commitment to time, patience, a soft touch, washable props, and the ability to “see” the shot before it’s created.  I happen to LOVE photographing newborns.  I just can’t get enough of the sweet innocence of new tiny bundles of heaven.  It’s where I get my “baby fix” now that my own babies are growing up.

One of my very favorite newborn photographers is Laura Brett.  Looking at her work, it’s obvious how committed she is to the art of newborn photography.  To visit her blog is to be lost in the buffet of newborn wonder and awe.  She has been on my 20 on Tuesday list for a long time and I’m thrilled that this is finally her week! Enjoy!

Hi Laura,

Where are you from?

I grew up in a small town outside of Greenville, SC.

Where is home now?

Home now is Atlanta, we moved here almost 7 months ago.

Are you formally educated or self-taught in photography?

I am a self-taught photographer with a business degree from the College of Charleston.

What made you decide to specialize in newborns?

There is always such excitement when it comes to planning a newborn session.  I knew it was about time to make newborns my specialization since they are my true passion.

How long does your typical newborn session last?

The typical newborn session last about 1.5 hours.

Talk to me about personal projects.  Are they important and what have you done lately?

I have made it a goal to get caught up with printing my personal photos this year.  I have been working hard organizing them and making albums.  I won’t tell you how far behind I was before starting.  🙂

How do you stay motivated and your photography current?

Photography is always changing and its easy to stay motivated when you have new and beautiful subject to capture!

If you could be invisible for one day with your camera…

Hmmm that is a tough one…I will have to come back to that one.

Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of?

Susan Stripling

What’s your best advice for balancing work and family?

I could write a novel on this question. You have to work hard to play hard and its important to enjoy them both while in the moment because its all so fleeting.

What’s in your camera bag?

Bag full of Nikon.

When you’re not photographing, where can we find you?

Hanging with my children and husband.

If not a photographer what would you have been?

Truthfully, I would have done something in labor and delivery. I am fascinated with child birth and the process of delivery.

If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet where would you build your dream home?

In Charleston, SC where my husband and I went to college and got married

What talent would you most like to have?

I would love to be able to freeze time.

What are the three words your spouse would use to describe you?

I asked him…he gets bonus points! He said,

Genuine, Passionate, Trustworthy

Something that is over rated…

Sleep

Your favorite movie of all time?

Father of the Bride

If you could change one thing you did while starting your photography business, what would it be?

If it could have been possible, I would have specialized from the beginning.

Name one blog you stalk regularly.

There are so many amazing photographers. I find a new one everyone week to stalk.  I love love Audrey Woulard, always have.

Laura Brett’s work can be found HERE.

Thank you, Laura!
