I don’t love cake.
I’d rather have pie or cookies or ice cream but ever since I saw this on Meg’s Whatever blog, I’ve been wanting to make it. I really wanted to whip it out for the last day of school but it was not to be. So I decided to make it for our Family Summer Chore Kick-Off Evening last night. Hey, there had to be SOMETHING sweet to off-set the chore doldrums.
Of course Meg made it look so simple and gorgeous with her photos. So I thought mine would be simple and turn out gorgeous as well. I pulled my camera out to document this simple and gorgeous cake. Bumping around in my mind were visions of Martha Stewart magazine covers and The Pioneer Woman’s gourmet cowboy cuisine posts. I should’ve known better. My camera has no place in my kitchen.
Ten Reason why you will never mistake me for Martha, or Meg, or Ree:
Note to Self for next time I make Happy Cake:
- Use room temperature butter
- Invest in 4 more cake pans so you don’t find yourself baking all night
- Don’t begin baking at 5pm right before dinner
- Invest in fresh new Wilton food colors. The gelatinous globs are a bear to mix.
- Cut the cake tops off so they will lie flat and your cake will not resemble the Leaning Tower of Pisa and you won’t have to resort to using barbeque tools to hold your cake in place.
- Keep your my camera far, far away from the kitchen
If you’ve got a hankering for a little sunshine in your day, or for something to make with your kids, give it a try. You can get all instructions on Meg’s blog. She is a daily must read for me. She has some serious photo skillz and has a house I could easily covet (if I were the coveting type).
it looks awesome!
don’t be so hard on yourself! you made it! good job. they will remember that. and not the lopsidedness.
what an honor to be grouped with martha and ree!
you are too kind. 🙂
Well i don’t know what you are talking about. That last photo looks GREAT.
What a fun, colorful cake. Almost makes me want to spend some time BAKING. Maybe I can do that for my soon to be 7 year old.
I’ll have to go check out Meg’s blog …
I might just have to bookmark that to make sometime soon! That is adorable and so much fun, my kids would go nuts! I think your photos were great (and hysterical!), you rock!!
I’ll never make this because it looks hard. But I love the post highlighting a cake (near) failure because perfection gets old on blogs, but mistakes never do!
Ooo! I just popped over from my blog that you came to from Meg’s… 🙂 I’m going to have to subscribe! Love this post… so funny!
I think it looks awesome and delicious!
You are REAL. And that’s why I love this post. I bet the cake tasted awesome, and every time I end up with a goofy, crumbly, lopsided one at home, that’s what I say to comfort myself!
Oh this made me laugh…and your pictures are awesome so you’re totally worthy to stand next to Pioneer Woman. And your cake turned out great!
Haaaa – that made me laugh. You are funny. I thought that last shot was very martha-esque. What a fun idea and a cute cake. I will have to check out that blog.

You are my kind of girl. I love this post.
Love it! You are already comparable to the BEST of them in my book…
I found your blog through Meg’s. She’s a daily must-read for me too. And I totally drooled over the pictures of her house. Isn’t it awesome? Although I’m intrigued by your house picture up there. I’ll have to check it out. I think I’ve found another blog here to add to my reading list. 🙂
It all tastes the same…whether it looks the same doesn’t really matter, right? (And if you think that looks bad, you should see some of the EASY two layer cakes I make…)
Wonderful post! Love the pictures and I was cracking up at the BBQ utensils. Love the cake. Bet it was the noms!
Oh! We must be long lost sisters! SO would have been how my version would have gone! 🙂 hey, it did make a GREAT post though! Always a bright side! 🙂 Thanks for making us laugh!
My husband has taken to calling the PW blog “foodie porn” I agree. You post was stinkin’ hilarious. . . I loved every last lopsidedness of it!
I tried to make it too….same outcome as you……especially the lopsideness…………and I even cut the tops off the darn cakes……
That looks like a lot of work, but very colorful! Kind of reminds me of the Rainbow layer jello dessert but with more texture! I’m sure your kids loved the colors and of course, Will, the frosting. Keep up the good work, Martha!
You think yours is bad…you should see my version. If you go to my blog and do a search for “rainbow cake” you will feel much more like Martha, Meg & Ree!
Well—–I LOVE cake and I was really wanting a piece by the time I finished reading—yummy! Its all about the taste anyway….
I think it a very happy cake and made in a happy home by a mom of some very lucky children! I just saw YUM on his adorable face!
Loved the idea and the last pictures shows it truly turned out great!
I need to check my Wilton globinous!
This cracks me up. I loved it.
Fabulous wonderful wenderful you. I will never be mistaken for Martha either. Thank GOODNESS!!!
You are a trip, xJ
The cake looks great! But I’m also interested in the Family Summer chore Kick-off Evening. Does that make the kids ENJOY doing chores? School just ended and I want my teenagers to have fun this summer, but I want to accomplish some things around the house as well!
hilarious! that cake looks delish. throw a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some rainbow sprinkles on that plate and you’ve got yourself a flat out masterpiece.
But it’s a lovely paradox, which Martha Stewart never faces: A big mess and a pretty cake, in its own way!
You get A plus for effort and the end result of the cake looks mighty yummy!
Wow that cake looks so cool! I think it was worth the effort 😉 Delicious!
