Memory Monday

herta-with-parents

I chose this picture for today’s Memory Monday post because I think it shows what kind of “salt of the earth” people my husband comes from.  There are so many facinating stories of  post war life in Austria that I’ve heard from his family.  One day I’d love to get them all down on paper to pass along to future generations.  From Charlotte:

This is Herta in her backyard with her parents around 1930. Times were very tough back then, but when Herta’s parents got a hold of an opportunity in 1924 to build their own house, they did not hesitate. Having very little money during that time of inflation and unemployment in Austria, they were able to build the house with their own hands for little money. Neighbors helped each other out, and when all was done, they prided themselves with growing their own fruit and vegetables, some even had their own chickens, goats, or cows right there in the outskirts of the city. Standing there in their backyard they represented a proud generation who dared to build their own future out of the ruins of WWI and the fallen monarchy.

We’re excited to celebrate an early Christmas with Charlotte and Bernd when they come visit this weekend.  I’ll post some pictures so you can “meet” my wonderful in-laws.

Happy Memory Monday!

  1. That is a great picture. And it’s so cool to have someone who can explain who is in the picture and what was going on in their lives. You are lucky to have those.

It will be fun for you guys to have Ralf’s parents out to visit. Have a great time with them! Say hi to everyone from me!!! Love you!

  2. And someday Maddy’s husband will write..

“And my wife’s wonderful parents.. in the midst of an attitude of go – go – go.. decided to retreat to the quiet hills of Idaho, and live on their own farm.. where they could see cows mating from their kitchen window”

Ok.. so maybe not that last part… but you guys are definately keeping up with your ancestors:)
