Art Display Project | Val Spring

I am honored and thrilled to welcome Val Spring of The Red Balloon Photography to be my guest blogger today!  Val has this amazing style; part retro, part vintage, part old school nostalgia, and often storybook, that I just can’t get enough of.  Her work stands out in a crowd and I’ve always been curious how that style would transfer to her own home and the way she uses her own photographs. (But, without a doubt, I knew it would somehow incorporate the color aqua.)  I am in love with the vintage camera shelf and the gorgeous light throughout her home!

I have, for the longest time, procrastinated on printing photos for our home. I’ve always had it on my “to do” list but it just never ended up making it to the top of it and instead kept being pushed down to the bottom of the list by other “to do’s” that at the time seemed more important. But last summer I finally made it a priority. The fact that my friend Breeze was coming to visit helped to bump it up quite a bit and I made it happen! Now I can not believe that I waited so long to do it because it makes all of us and the people that visit us so happy to see all these documented moments all over our home.

Our place is pretty small and I knew from the moment I took this picture of the birds that I wanted to hang it on the entrance wall. I just love the airy, peaceful feel that I get from it and I adore square crops so very much.
This is a 36″ x 36″ gallery wrap canvas.
These three images are displayed on one of the living room/dining room walls. I wanted a portrait of each of my daughters and one of them together. I will never forget the huge smiles on their faces when they saw their big photos on the walls.
These are 16″ x 24″ gallery wrap canvas’.
Between the kitchen and the dinning room there’s this tiny little window where I have a vintage scale that I got a few years ago and on it there’s now a mounted 11″ x 14″ print of a photo that I took of my husband and the girls last summer on the Oregon coast. I printed this for my husband to hang in his office but it’s still hasn’t make it there so I decided to find a spot for it until he remembers to take it along.
This is my work space. These two images are very special to me and I’ve always wanted to display them side by side. I took these the summer of 2010 and what I love so much about them is that both Lola and Olivia were totally unaware of me photographing them. They were both in the best of the worlds doing their thing, being carefree, enjoying life in a very child like way, which to me is just so magical.  Olivia’s is a 24″ x 36″ and Lola’s a 24″ by 24″ gallery wrap canvas’.
I also have an llustration Print of a girl with a camera. I saw that print on Pinterest and fell in love instantly so I went ahead and ordered it on the artist’s Etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/NanLawson?ref=seller_info and taped it to the wall with some acid free glue dots.
Also in my work area I have some of my vintage cameras displayed on a shelf.
This is my favorite window 🙂 I love the way light comes through it both in the morning and afternoon. On this little nook I have two photos facing each other. These are the only two images that we’ve had displayed for a long time. I took these two photos in my two favorite places in the world. One was at the beach town where I vacationed every summer ever since I was two years old up until I was eighteen. The other one was in the ski town where I lived for over three years and where I met my husband. I developed and printed these images in my home dark room down in Argentina several years ago.

This is the walkway that goes from our living room to the bedrooms. I have different sized and shaped photos hanging on a lace trim. I actually bought the trim to use along with the frame that’s on the last picture to make a jewelry holder that I found on pinterest. But then I decided to use the frame as a frame so ended up using the trim to hang pictures with clothpins. I tied two aqua ribbons on both tips to add some color. I kind of like it but the small clothpins would probably work better and look cuter. I’ll get to that soon.
Here is the frame that I was talking about. I bought this last year at an antiques show but it was white so I spray painted it in my favorite aqua shade. Then one day I was playing around with some prints trying to decide where to place them and I put the frame around this image and just loved the way it looked just like this, glassless and all. So I used some acid free sticky dots to stick the print to the wall and placed the frame around it.
One of the things we are lacking  is a family pictures. We have very few photos of the four of us together so a family session is in the plans for this year.
That’s about it for now. Thank you so much for inviting me to participate in this inspiring project. I feel extremely honored.

Thank you, Val!

  1. I adore Val! She is not only talented but also has a very kind heart! thank you for featuring her. I too can’t stop looking at her amazing pics.

  2. I love the images of the birds and girl swinging high in the sky. The best captures are when they are totally unaware of you and into their own thing 🙂 Also love the meaning behind your 2 long standing images!

  3. So many things that I like and want to have. I love that some of your images are places that you love. That’s what I want, I want images of places that I’ve been to and preferably taken by me. I love your vintage cameras. I am slowly building my collection. I only have 2. Love how you mounted a canvas on your vintage scale. I think your clothes pins are a great size. I pinned something on pinterest with clothing pins…maybe you’d like the look of glittered pins or cover it with pattern paper?

  4. this project has given me one more reason to love Val for, not that I needed anymore reason… Val, your home is exactly how I thought it would be. ….Simply stylishly beautiful. thanks for having us all come over 🙂
