Fifty-two Fridays: Family | Bay Area Photographer

My great aunt, who spent her life working as a nurse in the U.S. Navy and never married, turned 90 years old last year.  She is my mom’s favorite aunt, one of only two remaining  siblings from a family of nine.  My mom has taken it upon herself to look after Gladys.  She takes her to doctors appointments, to the mall, out to lunch, and has her over for every family holiday, whether Gladys wants to join us or not.   I was in Utah visiting my mom and we stopped by to visit Aunt Gladys at the rehabilitation center where she spent some time after a fall in her apartment.    My 15 year-old daughter was with us.  As we  were visiting, my mom had the idea to photograph our four generations of hands.  Four generations of women, each with our own unique stories to tell, intertwined by the ancestral tree.  I love this picture because it reminds me of the past, the present and the future as well as the strength of family bonds.
