Dear Fitness Instructor,
WHAT was THAT all about this morning? I’ve been coming to this class for 6 months now and it’s never been THIS hard!
I will cut you some slack because I know you were just subbing. Perhaps Cheryl failed to explain the intricacies of our 5:30 AM Strength Training class in Studio B upstairs. Perhaps she didn’t tell you that there’s a certain tried and true procedure we follow every Tuesday and Thursday morning. That Elaine always hands out the towels, Mike wears his red nylon shorts on Tuesdays and his orange terry cloth headband on Thursdays, and I’m always 5 minutes late to class. That we warm up to an instrumental of Eye of the Tiger. Perhaps she didn’t tell you the order of muscle groups we work. That squats always come first, followed by chest, followed by lunges. That we do the exact same number of reps to the exact same songs. Every. Single. Time. That we NEVER stray from the routine. EVER.
OK, I will admit that I haven’t been to class in, say, 6 weeks. But with Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and New Years, and back to school, and staying up late, a new season of 24, and snow, and rain, and darkness, and a warm bed, and blogging, I’ve been kind of busy. But I made the excrutiating effort to wake up at 4:45 this morning and brave the cold winds to make the 20 minute drive to attend your class. Only to be bombarded with quasi-yoga posing and fitness ball balancing, rear burning leg lifts and impossible core exercises.
Normally if I find I’m not quite up to task, I can fake it. A wholly believable exercise fake is truly an art. But I can do it. Usually. Until this morning. What’s with the plank on a single toe and a single elbow with a twist to the side and a count of 20? How can I fake something like that? And all that yoga mumbo jumbo at the end? A downward dog and a lotus? Couldn’t we just touch our toes, and stretch from side to side, like we always do? I’m pretty partial to a deep knee bend, a cleansing breath and a “pat yourselves on the back, you had a great workout” with a few customary claps at the end.
Isn’t it part of your job to adjust your routine to match the skill level of the class? Wasn’t the fact that we were all lying flat on the floor gaping at your yoga prowess with wide eyes and open mouths a pretty good indicator that there may have been a great discrepancy between your skill level and ours? I hate to make assumptions, but, you know, it just seemed to me to be the case.
As I write this I am beginning to feel the effects of this morning’s torture. I’ll make a point not to take in too many fluids today as I’m not sure I’ll have the muscle coordination to get up from off the toilet. And the upstairs will just have to wait for another visit from me for a couple of days weeks.
As much as I can appreciate “changing it up a little” from time to time, I’m looking forward to next week when Cheryl will be back with her regular 80s mixed tape, her hand weights and her comfortably regular routine. Because, truth be told, one can never get enough of “Eye of the Tiger”.

Thanks to Jennifer at Tatertots and Jello and to my mom at Quincy Cottage for this sweet award. Jennifer is off to Maui for a getaway trip with her husband but you can enter to win her ISLAND GIVEAWAY on Friday. And drop by Quincy Cottage and welcome my mom to the world of blogging. She’s been stuck at home with pneumonia for 2 weeks and would love some visitors. (She has a super cute house too.)
you get props from me for just going at all.
I’m with Sherine. That 4:45 am wake-up call would always go to voice mail. You’re a star!
It’s possible this is the exact reason I never take a fitness class at the gym. Ever.
And probably the reason my rear looks like it does, too.
Wendy. Kristy here. I’m commenting to ask you if you’re enjoying not homeschooling. I’m seriously considering quitting. Do you have any regrets? Are you glad you aren’t homeschooling anymore? Is your house cleaner? Do you have more time for yourself? Are you able to enjoy Will a little more? I just feel like I’m drowning. I can’t get anything done besides school and the bare essentials (we’re talking meals. That’s it.) The house…words fail. I’m constantly stressed because I’m never able to get to the things that need to be done. Recently, I’ve started working out and that has just wiped us out even more. Seriously, shouldn’t I be able to maintain my own health without igniting major educational consequences for my children? The kids aren’t happy. Keller wants to go to public school. They need more of a social outlet, because (as you know) while you homeschool, giving your kids social opportunities is one more thing that you’re responsible for that isn’t taken care of by the public school as it would be automatically if they went to public school. And social time is another one of those things on my list of stuff that isn’t getting done. I know it’s a really personal decision whether to keep going or throw in the towel, and that you can’t tell me what to do…I guess I’m just asking…do you guys seem happier on the whole?
I think you’re right, you can never have enough of Eye of the Tiger, so I’m opening iTunes right now to buy it. I’m hoping it will inspire me to get up from the computer and do some deep knee bends as I clean my house 😉
Working out never gets any easier, does it? That’s why I’m done with instructors…I’m a lap swimmer from way back, and that’s pretty much my workout, 3-4 times a week. It’s soft, it’s yielding, it’s low-impact, and high cardio…can’t beat it!
At least you “go” to a class, my daughters make fun of me because I will put on “Turbo Jam” and I end up sitting on the bed and “watching” it!!! I wish I loved to exercise like others I know!!!
ummm… you lost me at 4:45 am…..
I don’t care if you couldn’t even bend over, 4:45 makes you a trooper no matter what!
I hope you were kidding about all the new moves! I went back today to my gym (first time since before Christmas) it was the same–work, work, work. But, I was grateful that I felt well enough to go. I admire you for your early hours. Keep it up. It is good for you:)
You are a workout fiend! Good for you for going! I didn’t know you had called. Jeff just told me. Things were a little crazy as we were trying to extract ourselves from real life. We are having a wonderful time, just the two of us. Of course, that doesn’t mean I am not checking blogs…. LOL
XOXOXOXOX
Your sis
Ha ha! I’m chuckling at the old monitor here… I can just imagine what this guy was doing this morning! I kind of like the yoga – I want to try more of it, but I can see that I need to start off easy – not the hard stuff to begin with! Oh, that was a funny post! Way to go Wenderful!
LOL first…the torture made for a seriously funny blog post…second…she/he was just showing off!
You are kind of awesome. I loved this post.
(Um, no you don’t know me. I am a random mommyblogger who happened upon you by chance. I will probably be back.)
I got a stress fracture in my hand from yoga. It’s too stressful for me. Thanks for the giggle.
FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR LAUGHING! It is good to mix it up though- your body will thank you after you can walk again w/out pain. 🙂
5:30? Seriously? You deserve everything you get for being that masochistic. Can you give my baby his morning feeding at 6 while you’re up?
Oh, my!
