So… I LOVE all things having to do with beautiful homes. Just ask my husband. It drives him nutty. I could spend my entire Saturday hitting all of the open houses in my town. I’m a recovering home magazine hoarder. I’ve been know to spend way too many hours on my Redfin phone app viewing homes that are way over my budget. When we lived in Utah, the Parade of Homes was my favorite 2 weeks of the year. Beautiful homes are intriguing to me. I get it from my mom. My sisters are both plagued as well.
When my kids were younger, much of our “fun money” was spent on items and projects to beautiful our home. We were in that phase of life where our kids didn’t cost much, didn’t need much beyond trips to the library, shoes from Target, a Happy Meal every now and then and some Legos (for the boys) and a tutu (for the girl), and lots of time with us. During that period we lived in six different houses and tackled new carpet, paint, wood floors, window coverings, a major remodel and custom built my dream home. Those were good years.
These are also good years but our “fun money” has seen a “downturn” and our “not so fun money” is now going toward raising our kids who require less time with us and more money for sports teams, school clubs, piano lessons, tutoring, ACT fees, school trips, summer camps, and college savings. We’ve lived in this house for a year now and we love it. We’re so grateful to be where we are. But my itch to change certain things remains. The list of home project to-dos is lengthy but I know those projects can wait.
Well, most of them anyway.
These doors have been on the top of that list since we moved in. Golden oak is NOT my thing. At all. I’ve tried to spruce them up by hanging cute stars on them, adding a fun mat, a potted fern, a chair with a cute pillow… Still golden oak. I couldn’t take it any longer and on the second day of school last week, I headed to the paint store, bought my supplies and set to work to change the golden oak to Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue.
Ugly door, begone!
Here’s my arsenal of products which cost me a total of $50.
- BM Wythe Blue paint in satin
- A degreaser so I could skip the sanding portion of the job because, if there’s anything I hate more than golden oak, it would have to be sanding.
- Painters tape
- Roller
- small paint brush
After $50 and 3 hours of prepping and painting two coats…
Viola! My new front doors! Such a huge improvement. I’m thrilled that such a small investment yielded such a large impact in updating the curb appeal of my home.
Now off to find something fun to replace the stars!
OH my gosh!! I love it (: this looks amazing!!!
Great job Wendy! They look really nice.
